Scandiscapes

1. How did you get started in running Scandiscapes?

Scandiscapes came from a discussion in a Facebook group focusing on scandi interiors. We discovered that there was really very little out there that allowed us to also dress our exterior spaces in the Scandi style we love and also provide us with indoor plants that suit the aesthetic. My other company was a bit slow over Christmas (as consultancies tend to be) and I’d be advising companies on their customer experiences (both on and offline) for a decade, I set up the company.

2. How do you market yourself? Why?

Most of my marketing is online either on Facebook or Instagram. I believe in getting good at one channel before tackling more so starting where the whole idea started makes sense. One thing I have noticed with online marketing is that consistency is key – a week off Instagram will immediately result in a dip in sales!

3. Whom do you seek advice from for your business?

Through the London female startup scene, I am in touch with many amazing eCommerce founders who all sell different products but also face the same issues as me. This network has proven invaluable for keeping me sane by helping celebrate the good and ride out the bad. For the ops side, my accountants have been invaluable in getting me sorted.

4. What is your management style?

I’m fairly easy-going. I assume that the people working with me are adults so I let them set their own schedules, provided that things get done on time. Coaching rather than dictatorship is my way.

5. What advice would you give someone that wants to start their own business?

Make sure you have a nest egg! So many people found companies on no savings and often forget to budget survival costs – I know I did. A good accountant will set you up to win so do make sure your chosen one is able to answer your questions and is set up for accountancy software that you can both keep an eye on – it makes a huge difference…
