ChadSan in the Spotlight – Gemma Thorne
1. Why did you want to be an accountant?
Whilst at university, I started to think about what I could do with my degree in Maths. After some online research, I decided to complete a placement in an accountancy firm and ended up really enjoying it. I love spreadsheets and numbers so accounting felt like the perfect fit.
2. What do you consider to be the biggest challenge for small businesses today?
I would say just having the courage to start out and keep working hard. It can be so disheartening when your business isn’t doing as well as you’d hoped and there are always going to be some bumps in the road. Having the will power to continue putting your all into a small business after setbacks is so challenging.
3. As a young accountant, what are the challenges you face and how do you overcome them?
Probably the biggest challenge as a young accountant is feeling the need to know absolutely everything about accounting. That’s why working at ChadSan is such a great experience because I come across all sorts of different areas of accounting, and it gives me the opportunity to continuously build up my knowledge.
4. What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love getting to know all the different businesses and working with clients to offer advice on any of their business needs. There’s also the people at ChadSan, the support and culture here makes my job so enjoyable!
5. What’s the best business advice you were ever given?
Take everything as it comes and don’t let fear stop you from achieving great things.
