What inspired you to pursue a career in accounting?
I have always liked numbers and my first office job after Uni was working in the accounts department of a business school. This is when I thought about studying for an accounting qualification.
What are some common financial challenges you see small businesses facing?
I would say cash management is the most common issue and having robust controls in place. Also being able to raise capital when the business is still at an early stage.
What do you find most rewarding about working with small businesses and entrepreneurs?
Helping them! Providing advice and making their lives easier so they can focus on growing their business. Also seeing them expand and being successful over time.
What’s the most impactful piece of advice you’ve received in your career?
‘The devil is in the detail’ and ‘check and check again!’ are both mantras I have at the forefront of my thinking.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work and have you ever found any parallels between your hobbies and accounting?
I have a season ticket for West Ham (for my sins). I love music and enjoy cooking and podcasts. I also used to be a semi Football Manager addict which is basically a game of spreadsheet simulation full of statistics.
